Women & Girl’s Cricket
Development Plan
The current girls at the club have progressed to these numbers in the last 3 years through: •
Coaching sessions at local junior schools •Family of senior players who are involved in ‘Thursday Night Cricket’
The club has included a section on
Thursday Nights for girls for the past 8 years – and where
appropriate any promising girls have been included in age group
cricket played in the Border Counties Youth League. Additionally
nominations have
Rachel Richardson and Vicky Salt (now U16s) and just recently Lydia Grice (now U12) who we identified at our coaching at Leighfield School. A retired Head of Sport at Uppingham Community College oversees this for us. Rachel Richardson has this season secured a regular place in our senior 3rd XI playing in the Grantham & Melton Cricket Association. Rachel was also voted the Rutland Times Young Sportswoman of The Year 2009.
Current Volunteers
Uppingham Town CC have a strong volunteer base which extends to some 60 individuals from the local community. We have over 250 social members who are a useful source of new volunteers. We have one Level II coach and 13 Level 1 assistant coaches of which 4 are under 21. We have 4 volunteers attending groundsmen courses, 6 doing umpiring courses this winter and one has completed a cricket scoring course at Grace Road. We have managers in place for all age group cricket from U9 to U15s and progression into our senior league development team run by our Level II coach. Managers are supported very strongly by parents enabling us to fulfil fixtures in the Border Counties Youth League in and around Rutland and across into Lincs & Cambs. The training and development for our volunteers is progressing to prepare us for the new ground in 2011.
School Links
The club offers ground and facility use at the existing location and this arrangement will continue with the new ground from 2011. There are no other cricket facilities in Uppingham other than the fee paying school. The schools supported are: •Uppingham Community College •Leighfield Junior School – school agreement in place

The growth in girl cricketers at ‘Thursday Night Cricket’ has come from both junior schools as senior players are actively involved in other school based activities – the sessions we have run at Leighfield School have been structured so that equal opportunities are given to girls and boys. Sessions have been set at a maximum 20 children and the group made up of 10 boys and 10 girls . A mirror plan will be used at Uppingham C of E School in 2010. We have not promoted girls cricket in the senior school yet as we need the new facility before we can grow the numbers further.
2011 – New Ground
The new facility has already two grounds alongside each and funding has just been secured for a small timber frame ‘Junior’ pavilion.
The junior pitch and changing facilities for the whole ground will give us the flexibility to stage women and girls cricket. The main pavilion when built is to ECB standards with 4 separate changing rooms as well as shower facilities. This will enable us to hold two fixtures simultaneously and one could be women’s and girls without causing any potential issues. In addition we have the second ‘junior’ pavilion. The current ground whilst blessed with space does not have any practise nets, so all ‘Thursday Night Cricket’ sessions involve drills or small games – the new ground will have the space too, but will also have roll on roll off cages for the second square and ‘astroturf’ caged nets. This will enable us to deliver a mixture of drills, structured net sessions and competitive games. We plan to run dedicated net sessions on other nights and weekends at the new ground – we are restricted and unable to do this where we currently play.
Development
Player Recruitment:
1.Continue with the schools agreement for Leighfield and Uppingham C of E – this will help feed U9/U11s girls into the club cricket nights 2.Promote cricket to Years 7 to 11 through our current playing members and the PE departments at The Uppingham Community College. In addition we’ll explore and understand the number of local girl cricketers at Uppingham and Oakham fee paying schools 3.Link in with Oakham Cricket Club ‘Chance to Shine’ programme to offer dedicated route for girl cricketers in Rutland who want to play more and with a girl’s team 4.Extend the link with clubs by writing to all Rutland / Melton based clubs who do not have a girls section. 5.Enter an U11 team in the Border Counties Youth League for 2010 Arrange ‘one off’ fixtures with like minded clubs in the LRCB catchment area For the link with local clubs UTCC will have to foster relationships and have agreed a clear player pathway, not only into district / county age groups but also back to the local club they were nominated from. UTCC will engage specified clubs with the support of the LRCB in early 2010.
Volunteer
Support:
UTCC are currently reviewing its coach structure and team managers to find the best way of incorporating this plan into the club. A new female manager (with previous playing links to the club) has been identified to help co-ordinate fixtures with the support of an existing manager. A dedicated coach will be appointed to help develop skills. The junior cricket committee will have a dedicated girls representative and this will mirrored on the main committee has the section develops over the next 5 years.
Player Pathway: We will continue to promote and integrate girls into age group cricket in the Border Counties Youth League at U15 and below. We will continue to use girls in senior sides on merit so that all juniors see this as progression into senior cricket
Sustainability
Agreement with Clubs & Schools: To maintain a steady flow of new young cricketers the school links will have to be maintained each and every year. We will learn in 2010 / 2011 how effective the promotion of a ‘Rutland Girls’ cricket team has been – this will depend of the support from: Rutland & Melton cricket clubs Uppingham Community Collge Oakham Cricket Club Chance to Shine programme The club with support from LRCB will engage other cricket clubs and schools in the locality to understand the likely demand – this will form the basis of a plan to grow and sustain the project. The rate and speed at which the project gains momentum is subject to the new ground development coming on stream in 2011
